Nothing to Fear about JJ Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
Why you have nothing to worry about about the new Star Wars.
Two weeks after JJ Abrams was announced that he was directing star Star Wars Roberto Orci, writer of Mission Impossible III & Star Trek, and Melissa Blake, writer of Sleepy Hollow, brought JJ to speak to a group of film students at LMU. There he told us about his hesitation to take over the new generation of Star Wars movies. Don’t get me wrong he wanted to direct it but he didn’t know if he should. He was such a fan but he wanted to stay a fan. Stay innocent. Be an audience member. All he wanted was to get to enjoy the story, this journey, this world. He wanted to see these characters that he grew up with and loved come back to the silver screen. Not to mention he wanted to have nothing to do with the very real possibility that these new Star Wars movies could once more be a disaster. But after seeing the first cut of “Into Darkness” Steven Spielberg called him up and told him “You know you are directing Star Wars, right.” And when Spielberg tells you you are directing Star Wars how can you say no…
Besides the fact that JJ is super fan, what won me over were the writers of the new Star Wars. Lawrence Fucking Kasdan. The man who has written some of my favorite movies. The man who knows character and story better than anyone. The man that is responsible for my two favorite Star Wars movies to date was coming back to the project; THAT sold me alone. Then the fact they spent over year rewriting the script to ensure that this was the right story to tell. That made me realize that this film may very well be the best Star Wars movie to date. This movie isn’t going to be about CGI effects and an annoying as hell alien. This new batch of movies are going to be about the characters that I have loved since I was 7, and I am finally going to see Leia with a lightsaber. And all I have to say about that is “fuck yes!”
So to all of the haters. Look at that trailer again. Look at the sweat on John’s brow. That’s real man. Just take a minute and realize that the people who are making this movie know where and why this story strayed in the last three films. And they are doing everything in their power to make sure this movie is so god damn good that you forget that asshole Jar-Jar’s name.
